Personal Dedication

  Andy Johnson Portrait

Andy Johnson prepared for a career in golf course architecture through a variety of related professions in the world of golf. After many years as both a turfgrass manager and a professional golfer, golf course architecture was the natural direction for him to channel his talents and abilities.

Andy Johnson cannot remember when golf was not a central part of his life. The son of a golf professional, most of his youth was spent on golf courses in Pennsylvania, an area of the country that has one of the greatest concentrations of outstanding golf courses in the world.

"I lived the golfer’s dream, playing classic golf courses such as Merion, Winged Foot, Pine Valley and Baltusrol. My youth left me with a love of great golf courses and a sense of what elevates great golf courses above good ones." Thus was born his love for the game and his dedication to tradition.

After graduation from college and a celebrated amateur career, he entered the ranks of golf professionals. In this role, he attained a sound business perspective on the golf world. As a professional golfer, he honed his knowledge of the operations of a golf course. Teaching golf lessons made him sensitive to the broad continuum of golfer’s abilities. Playing tournament golf contributed to his insight into the nation’s top level players-both their view of a golf course and their approach to game strategy.

With 12 years as a professional golfer under his belt, Andy sought the additional challenges of turfgrass management and added the title of golf course superintendent to his responsibilities. He then helped to bring several golf courses into national prominence when he implemented major renovation and re-design projects. These initial successes were instrumental in launching his distinguished career in golf course architecture.

Andy Johnson’s first design projects again involved working with existing golf courses, helping them to improve their playability, infrastructure and aesthetics. He has gone on to place golf courses in many challenging and spectacular environments. During his years of work as a golf course architect, Andy has raised the standard of the profession. He has gained a reputation as one of the world's most artistic and highly competent architects.
